Gradient Group, LLC was selected by the City of Houston Development Services Department for improvements to the 37.3-acre Alief Community Park, home to the Alief Neighborhood Community Center. The Alief Neighborhood Center combines three City of Houston departments (Library, Parks, & Health) to create a civic center at the heart of this urban park. Raised out of the floodplain, the building’s elevated ‘front porch’ frames a space for the diverse community to come together, share ideas, and express an identity unique to Alief. The Center is a model for resilient design in a post-hurricane Harvey environment – a ‘Lilly-pad’ for those seeking shelter from the storm. The project included design for the main service building along with associated surface parking and parking garage, pool and splash pad, sports fields, jogging / bicycle trails, playground and low impact development features that incorporate detention and mitigation to meet City of Houston drainage and design regulations. In addition to all general civil site development engineering and construction services, Gradient was involved with the community involvement meetings to participate in providing the community with the final product that satisfied all parties’ desires. This one-of-a-kind project required all aspects of site civil design to be incorporated for to be successful.
